Every Rookie in the preseason is trying to make the case to their team that they belong on the 53 man roster. Last night Craig Reynolds was trying to do just that for the Detroit Lions. However, Reynolds’s story of joining the Lions differs from other players trying to make the team. See, as other players have already been in camp before the first preseason game, he joined the Lions that day.

In fact, Reynolds spoke after the game about how he was introducing himself to his new teammates and coaches during the game,

“I introduced myself in the huddle at one point. They were like, ‘Yo, what’s your name? A couple coaches introduced themselves to me on the sideline during the game. It’s definitely crazy, but they’ve just made it real easy. I’ve been comfortable being here.”

However, for Craig Reynolds, a player who, before last night, has had one rushing attempt in the NFL. But last night, he achieved his first career touchdown. Reynolds spoke of the moment after the game,

“It meant a lot, you know. First career touchdown. And I got a call from my older brother today and he just told me to let it rip. Friday the 13th — 13 was my number in college and high school — it’s like, ‘Today’s going to be — just do something special.’ I went out there and you know, all week the coaches said let it rip. Don’t think, just play. … And I just said, ‘You know, let’s go ham.”

Stories like Reynolds help fuel what head coach Dan Campbell is trying to bring to Detroit with a huge emphasis on competition,

“We’ll see where this goes, but he’s got that look in his eye and he did when he walked in yesterday. You can tell it’s like, ‘Hey man, I’m here to compete and I don’t know enough of this playbook, but you can put me in there.'”

Though it is unknown if Chris Reynolds will make the final roster that will open the season against the San Francisco 49ers. However, last night he proved to his team that he belongs in the National Football League. The Lions play their next preseason game against the Steelers next Friday.
