“The Cowboys are winning the Super Bowl this year.”
If you have the privilege of knowing a Cowboys fan, you have heard that phrase more times than one. Some call them the most delusional fans on Earth and others the most passionate. Win or lose, there is no changing the minds of these die hard supporters. If you were to ask why they did not win last year, they would simply blame it on the injury of their multi-million dollar man, Rayne Dakota Prescott.
This is year six for the Dallas Cowboys’ franchise QB Dak Prescott and the most important one of his career. Coming off a devastating season-ending ankle injury as well as a new contract some feel he may not have deserved, the pressure has never been higher.
Pay Day
After playing the 2019-2020 season on the franchise tag, the tug-of-war between Prescott and the Cowboys finally ended. Prescott signed a contract which made him the second highest player in the league behind Patrick Mahomes. The contract includes a $66 million signing bonus which is the highest in league history. The deal also included $126 million in guaranteed money.
Jerry Jones is reluctant to sign max deals such as this which is evident with former players such as Dez Bryant, DeMarco Murray, and Byron Jones. Surprisingly, this was not the case with Dak. Jerry’s faith does not come cheap. Yes Prescott has the money but he also has added pressure from Jerry to deliver what Cowboys’ fans having been craving since ’96, a Super Bowl.
Supporting Cast
Prescott received his bag and so did his partners in crime. Ezekiel Elliot and Amari Cooper also signed extensions, keeping the trio in Big D for years to come. Why should we care and why should the league? Only three teams had three receivers with 800+ yards and those teams are the Steelers, the Panthers, and you guessed it…the Cowboys. The Cowboys were the only team to have a fourth receiver with over 600 yards and a runningback to surpass 900 yards.
All this production came with the absence of QB1. Prescott who threw for 1,690 yards through four weeks which is the most in NFL history. Had Prescott kept on that pace he would have finished with 6.760 passing yards, breaking Peyton Manning’s record of 5,477 which he set in 2013. With receivers like Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb, Prescott could become the first 6,000 yard passer in NFL history.
Expectations
The motivation is there for the Cowboys and for Prescott. It is no secret that the NFC East is one of the worst the divisions in the NFL. Andy Dalton filled in for most of the year and the Cowboys finished one game back from the leader, the Washington Football Team. Based on roster talent, the Cowboys have a real chance to not only win the division, but also quench the thirst of Cowboys fans everywhere, and compete for a championship. It all starts with the leader and that leader is Dak Prescott.
With contract negotiations being a thing of the past, and recovery going as planned, the only thing standing in the way of the Cowboys is the Cowboys (and maybe Jerry Jones’s antics). It is time for Dak to play up to his contract and bring the Lombardi back to Dallas. Despite a shoulder injury suffered during preseason, Prescott is poised to start Week 1.
For Cowboys’ fans who yell “We’re going to win the Super Bowl” this could be the year that that statement may be true.
