36 year old defenseman Ryan Suter and the Dallas Stars agreed to a four year contract worth $14,600,000. Two words, oh boy. This is not going to end well. After getting bought out by the Minnesota Wild, the Stars signed him fairly quickly. Ryan Suter will not make it to the end of the contract.

Why This Doesn’t Make Sense

First of all, Minnesota knew they had to get younger. That’s why they said goodbye to him. The Stars added to an already old defense core. Miro Heiskanen is the youngest at 22. After that, it’s all age 27 and up. There were young defensemen on the market, and Dallas passed. Meanwhile, there is a reason why you don’t see a lot of defensemen in their mid to late 30s last long on NHL rosters. When they get older, they get slower. Goal scorers like Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, and Brad Marchand can just blow right by them.

Dallas Will Not Perform Well

There is a chance that this team will the be the worst team defensively. That’s not exactly ideal for a team that was in the Stanley Cup Final in 2020. It looks like they are only getting worse. Even a great offense can’t bail out bad defense all the time. Stars fans better hope that this isn’t the long term plan, or this will be bad news.
