After months of speculation over the offseason, Cook has finally announced his decision. According to Adam Schefter, the four-time Pro Bowler, Dalvin Cook, is signing with the New York Jets on a one-year deal worth $8.6 million.
Dalvin Cook’s Rumoured Landing Spots
Cook had been zeroed in on the AFC East for quite some time. He had first expressed interest with the Miami Dolphins and many thought that’s where he would end up. After all, Miami is his hometown and the Dolphins didn’t exactly have a number one option in the running back room. Talks eventually died down when Miami didn’t offer enough money for the 28-year-old.
The Patriots were also in the running for the Dalvin Cook sweepstakes, but just signed Ezekiel Elliott to a smaller contract hours earlier today. New England never seemed like a realistic option from the start with Bill Belichick’s propensity to avoid paying free-agent running backs a ton of money.
Busy Offseason For The Jets
This signing caps off one of the most active and successful off-season periods for the New York Jets ever. They have arguably signed the top free agents available at running back and quarterback. Here’s a look at all of the new faces in New York this season:
- RB Dalvin Cook (Vikings)
- QB Aaron Rodgers (Packers)
- S Chuck Clark (Ravens)
- S Adrian Amos (Packers)
- QB Tim Boyle (Bears)
- OT Yodny Cajuste (Patriots)
- WR Randall Cobb (Packers)
- OL Trystan Colon (Ravens)
- WR Mecole Hardman (Chiefs)
- DT Quinton Jefferson (Seahawks)
- WR Allen Lazard (Packers)
- P Thomas Morstead (Dolphins)
- OL Wes Schweitzer (Commanders)
- OL Billy Turner (Broncos)
- DT Al Woods (Seahawks)
How Will Cook Fit in the Jets Offense?
Cook will be joining a crowded backfield with second-year RB Breece Hall. Last season Hall proved he was good enough to easily carry an entire workload by himself, but this signing makes sense considering his ACL injury last season. Now the Jets can afford to ease Hall back into play, and they shouldn’t skip a beat doing so. Cook has some mileage, but there are a lot of treads left on his tires. When the Jets get both back in the fold, it will be interesting to see how the role may change for Dalvin Cook.
The Jets are going all in on 2023-24 and will definitely be the most interesting team to pay attention to this season. With their future beyond Aaron Rodgers being a complete mystery, it seems like anything short of an AFC Championship game is a failure for this team.
