Damian Lillard has been one of the best players in the NBA over the last few years. Every year, Lillard continues to get better as well. Though the one thing he has always struggled with is defense.
Bringing In Defensive Minds
Last season, the Portland Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey went out and got a couple of defensive-minded players like Derrick Jones Jr. and Robert Covington. The latter helped out the Blazers in so many ways on the defensive side of the ball and was one of the best defensive players that the Blazers have had in such a long time. Though still struggled in that category, the Blazers have never been known as a defensive team with Terry Stotts at the helm. Great guy, and a good offensive coach. But there is one thing that needs to be pointed out:
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!
That’s where the Blazers new coaching staff comes in. Chauncey Billups was announced as the head coach. Over the past couple of days, we have also seen the Blazers bring on not one but two of their assistant coaches. The Blazers are finalizing a deal with Scott Brooks as the head assistant and LA Clippers Assistant Roy Rogers. Scott Brooks was a good head coach in the past with the rosters that he was given, and Roy Rogers has been a superb defensive coach in the recent stops that he has made.
Rogers will help Nurkic get better on the defensive side of the ball and the rest of the team.
Damian Lillard – Learn It, Before You Mean It
If you haven’t heard that Damian Lillard is playing for Team USA, get out from the rock you have been living under. This summer Damian Lillard is playing in the Summer Olympics. But, the biggest thing about that is not that he is playing or playing against tougher competition. What matters most is whom he is playing for. No, not just Team USA. He is playing the Defensive Mastermind himself, Gregg Popovich.
So before even coming back to play under the new coaching staff in the fall, Damian Lillard will be familiarized with defense and will be well prepared to help lead his team on that side of the ball. Therefore, the Blazers will be better suited to win a championship.
