UFC President Dana White recently broke news about compelling matchups to end the year including Three title fights for UFC 295 and 296. Former Light Heavyweight Champion Jiri Prochazka will make his return on November 11th to fight for the title he vacated due to injury. Prochazka will face Former Middleweight Champion Alex Pereira, who recently defeated top contender Jan Blachowicz in his first fight at 205 pounds. Multiple UFC announcements were made recently including a Welterweight title fight between Colby Covington and Leon Edwards, which headlines UFC 296.
Covington has not fought since March of 2022 but the former collegiate wrestler could pose problems for England’s first 170-pound champion. Edwards will travel to the United States as this fight takes place at the T-Mobile Arena on December 16th. Also, newly crowned Flyweight Champion Alexandre Pantoja faces a familiar opponent in Brandon Royval. Pantoja defeated Royval by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in their first meeting, but Royval has since gone 3-0. This 125-pound title fight will be the Co-Main event for UFC 296.
Jiri Prochazka (29-3) vs. Alex Pereira (8-2):
The Co-Main event of UFC 295 will feature world-class strikers at 205 pounds. Former Champion Jiri Prochazka had to vacate his title after a gruesome shoulder injury during training. Prochazka will have a chance to regain his belt against former two-weight kickboxing world champion Alex Pereira. Stylistically this is going to be a very entertaining matchup. Both fighters are dangerous knockout artists who rarely look to take their opponents to the ground. Prochazka is one of the most creative strikers in UFC history and has many highlight-reel knockouts in big fights. Since Prochazka took the belt from Glover Teixeira in June of last year, he has yet to compete inside the cage.
After his knockout loss to Middleweight Champion Isreal Adesanya, Pereira moved up in weight to defeat Former Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowitz in July. Pereira is trained by Prochazka’s former opponent Glover Teixeira in Danbury, Connecticut. Two of the most violent strikers in the sport competing for a vacant belt is the perfect fight before Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. Fight fans won’t want to miss this action packed showdown.
(C) Leon Edwards (21-3) vs. Colby Covington (17-3)
UFC 296 will be headlined by a massive Welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington. Edwards knocked out longtime champion Kamaru Usman and then defeated him by decision in their rematch at UFC 286. Having gone unbeaten since 2015, Edwards is a talented kickboxer whose ran through 11 straight opponents. Many fight fans have been anticipating this matchup for months, with both fighters possessing very different styles. Covington is a dominant wrestler who holds wins over quality opponents like Jorge Masvidal, Robbie Lawler, and Tyrone Woodley.
If Covington can get this fight to the ground we may have a new Welterweight champion. Covington normally applies a significant amount of pressure when he strikes, but he will have to be wary of walking into the dangerous attacks of Edwards. Betting lines have yet to come out for this contest but Edwards should be a slight favorite. Edwards has defeated many accomplished grapplers in his career including Gunnar Nelson and Rafael Dos Anjos.
