The Las Vegas Raiders 2020 Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller was traded to the New York Giants Tuesday for a third-round pick.
Waller immediately becomes newly paid Giants quarterback Daniel Jones‘ No. 1 target in the passing game. The Pro Bowl tight end will be heavily involved in the passing game as the Giants will continue their search for a No. 1 wide receiver. This move will bolster the Giants offense as the 2022 Giants struggled to move the ball in the passing game and will now have another reliable option to pair with running back Saquon Barkley. Waller had back-to-back 1,000+ receiving yard seasons with Las Vegas in 2019-20.
This trade comes as a surprise as Waller signed a three-year, $51 million contract six months ago with the Raiders. After the signing, Waller’s agent was displeased with the negotiations with Las Vegas.
“This was one of the most challenging negotiations I’ve encountered,” said Walker’s agent Drew Rosenhaus.
As the 2022 season went on, Waller was being shopped at the trade deadline but would finish the season with the Raiders. Darren Waller was finally traded from Las Vegas to the Giants for their No. 100 pick, which New York acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2022 mid-season Kadarius Toney trade.
The Raiders now lose a reliable option for their new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as head coach Josh McDaniels seems to be replicating the old New England Patriots roster by signing Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Myers Tuesday. Now Las Vegas will be in the market for a tight end in free agency or the draft to bolster their offense.
