Another Sports Blog died on Monday when G/O sold Deadspin, proceeding to lay off all of their employees afterward. G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller announced that the sports blogging website would be sold to European startup Lineup Publishing.
Less than a half hour later, all of the employees were told that they would not be retained by the new owner. They were locked out of internal slack channels and company laptops.
“The rationale behind the decision to sell included a variety of important factors that include the buyer’s editorial plans for the brand,” Spanfeller stated. “Tough competition in the sports journalism sector, and a valuation that reflected a sizable premium from our original purchase price for the site. While the new owners plan to be reverential to Deadpin’s [sic] unique voice, they plan to take a different content approach regarding the site’s overall sports coverage.”
Let it be known that we here at Fantom Sports Industries won’t ever give up, no matter how tough the competition is. We believe that Champions are Made in the Shadows. We will work as hard as we need to in order to get to the top of the industry.
“Deadspin’s new owners have made the decision to not carry over any of the site’s existing staff and instead build a new team more in line with their editorial vision for the brand,” Spanfeller continued.
Deadspin is just the latest Sports Media company to throw in the towel. They join a long list of blogs that have experienced some layoffs in the last year. A list that includes Sports Illustrated, ESPN, The Athletic and many others. Meanwhile, we here at Fantom Sports are growing and it’s going to continue to be that way.
