There are only a few days remaining before the NHL’s Olympic break, which runs from Feb. 6–24. Teams are not permitted to make trades during that period.

That leaves just 10 days after play resumes before the NHL trade deadline on March 6.

Teams will have plenty to consider during the two-week break, but which clubs should be buyers — and which should be sellers — during that crucial 10-day window?

Let’s break it down.

TEAMS THAT SHOULD BUY 💰

BUFFALO SABRES

The Sabres have been on a tear the last few months, and have racked up a 31-18-5 record. In a tight race for the wildcard spot, this team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2011 is looking to a strong finish this season. Who can help them get there?

Injuries have forced the Sabres’ top four defenseman to play heavy minutes. Adding some defensive depth could give the Sabres the endurance they need late in the season to make a big playoff push.

LOS ANGELES KINGS

Sitting in a wildcard spot, this time on the Western Conference side, the Kings come into February just a few games above .500.

Adrian Kempe has been lights out for the black and silver as he leads the team in almost every offensive stat. However, the Kings have the fourth-lowest goals per game (2.57) and are tied for the third-lowest power play goals this season.

So, how do you score more goals? You go out and get a goal scorer or a playmaker. Someone who can play on either power play line and gel with each teammate.

With the New York Rangers confirming that they will be getting rid off Artemi Panerin, the Kings should make a big push for the 34-year-old playmaker.

MINNESOTA WILD

After GM Bill Guerin made a blockbuster move to bring star defenseman Quinn Hughes to the team, the Wild have looked like a true threat this season, and will be a top-three seed in the Central Division.

However, the Wild is still missing a key piece: a top-line center.

Look for the Wild to go after someone like Vincent Trocheck or potentially even Nazem Kadri. If the Wild want to be all-in like they appear to be, this will be a big move to watch out for at the deadline.

TEAMS THAT SHOULD SELL 💸

NEW YORK RANGERS

It’s been a tough collapse for the Rangers since their Presidents Trophy win a few years ago, and things are looking rough with many of their star players on the trade block.

We already know Planarian will not be a Ranger by next season, but what about some other key names, such as Trocheck? Furthermore, what should they be looking for in return?

The Rangers are a team that needs to get younger; they need to trade for youth and development this deadline. One of the ways you do this is by trading for draft picks, or, more importantly, for high-scouted prospects.

The Rangers’ record might not reflect the talent on the team, but they sure could use a couple of deals to give the die-hard fans something to look forward to in the next few seasons.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS

This may come across as a cop-out, considering they already sold their franchise defenseman Quinn Hughes to the wild earlier this season, but the Canucks are dead-last in the league.

The only thing you could really say about the Canucks, is that they need more draft capital. The more draft picks you get, the better chance you have of finding that diamond in the rough of their next few All-Stars.

ST. LOUIS BLUES

The Blues are the second-worst team in the league with only 49 points as of Feb. 2nd.

With no sign of making any massive deals, it might be smart for the Blues to use some big names and get some draft capital of their own in return.

A name that comes to mind is Jordan Kyrou. It might seem a little crazy, with his contract not expiring until 2031. However, there might be some teams on the market looking for a scoring winger and would be willing to through in some cash and prospects.

One of those teams is the Washington Capitals, who have already had an eye out for Planarian, but might want to look in the direction of 27-point scorer Kyrou.

Another team that would be interested is the Tampa Bay Lightning, who are also looking to make another push for Lord Stanley, a team that for sure has the money and resources to spend.

The NHL is sending its players to compete for gold in Milan in the coming days, and we’ll be watching. But back home in North America, we will also be keeping an eye out for who’s potentially on the move and who’s not.
