Defensive Rookie of the Year Best Bets

Defensive Player of the Year
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

I recently published best bets for OROY, now it’s onto the Defensive Rookie of the Year. This year’s group is full of eye opening talent and athleticism, and there will be a lot of guys with instant impact. With that being said, let’s take a look at some good players to put your money on for the award. All odds are found here.

Buy Patrick Surtain II

Surtain opened his NFL career with a bang. Broncos fans everywhere rejoiced when Surtain took an interception back to the house in his debut. Surtain should start as soon as Week 1 and has the best secondary in the NFL around him. Vic Fangio’s defenses are known for creating a lot of turnovers, and Surtain should benefit. Given his pedigree and the roster he’s joining, Surtain is in store for a stellar rookie campaign. His current odds are +1400, which is way too low for a player of his caliber.

Fade Inside Linebackers

There’s a clear big three in Vegas’ eyes in terms of Rookie Inside Linebackers. Those three are Micah Parsons (+500), Jamin Davis (+800), and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (+800). None of these players are worth putting money on, although they do not lack talent. The history of the award proves fatal for Linebackers in recent memory, as Darius Leonard is the only one to win in the last 5 years. Also, these are all very high rankings for guys who aren’t as polished as other players in this draft. Parsons and Davis got drafted highly mostly due to their athletic traits, and JOK has the positional question mark we saw with Isaiah Simmons last year.

Joe Tryon is the Edge to Bet on

Last years draft was one of the first drafts without a clear top Edge Rusher. There was a lot of discussion on who deserved to be taken first out of the group going into it. It ended up being Jaelen Phillips at 18 to the Dolphins. 18 is a pretty low draft spot for a premium position, and I do think Phillips deserved to be the first Edge taken. But, that does not mean he has the best chance at Defensive Rookie of the Year. Joe Tryon fell into a dream scenario. He got drafted by the reigning Super Bowl Champions, and would instantly have a role with them. He took a year off due to COVID, but ended his hiatus with a wowing preseason debut. This guy will get the snaps and has the talent, and should be who you bet on for this award, especially at +2500.
