Delta Airlines Apologizes After Video of College Golf Team’s Clubs Being Thrown Went Viral

East Tennessee State Golfers had some jitters about having to travel across three different time zones for the NCAA Division 1 Championship. That is why they left a little early so they could acclimate to the time zone in California.

“The team qualified in competition at UNC Chapel Hill, they finished second in the region and earned the right to play for the national championship,” ETSU athletics director Richard Sander told Knox News. “That’s a really big deal.”

While they were boarding their plane, they watched as the Delta Airlines workers carelessly heaved their golf club bags onto the tarmac at the San Diego airport. The team caught the footage themselves.

“And then that happened (to their clubs),” Sander said. “They were all concerned and anxious. … They’re getting ready to play in what might be the most important competition in their lives (so) to see that, it was scary.”

The team went out to hit some balls the day after and thankfully there was no damage to the clubs themselves, but some of the bags were damaged and some personal items were broken.

The morning after the video was posted, Delta Airlines apologized for how the Golf Clubs were treated. The Airlines made a public response to the video directly and posted a press release about the incident.

“We apologize to the ETSU Golf team and ask for a mulligan on how their equipment was handled,” a Delta spokesperson said in a press release. “We’re in direct contact with the Bucs to ensure they have what they need to successfully compete in the NCAAs.”

The employees who tossed the clubs don’t work for Delta directly. They are instead employed by a company called Unifi Aviation. Delta took responsibility though and wants to pay for any damages. The University’s attorneys will work with the airlines.

As of Monday morning, the team was tied for 14th at the championships.
