Tony Stubblefield

Some changes are coming to the head basketball coaches in the Big East. The DePaul Blue Devils fired Tony Stubblefield in the middle of his third season at the helm. DePaul has struggled this season as they are only 3-15 through 18 games and are 0-7 in Big East play.

Depaul’s Vice President and Athletic Director DeWayne Peevy made the announcement Monday. He said the school wanted to “thank Coach Stubblefield for his hard work and determination over the last two-plus seasons to move our basketball program forward through a new era for DePaul Athletics. Unfortunately, we did not meet our goals.”

Tony Stubblefield replaced outgoing coach Dave Leitao in 2021 after serving 11 seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon. His record has steadily declined in each of his three seasons in Chicago. The Blue Demons went 15-16 in his first season, but followed that up with a 10-23 season before the abysmal 3-15 start to this season.

DePaul struggled in conference play during Stubblefield’s entire tenure. The Blue Demons lost the final 12 games of last season to secure last place in the Big East. So far this season, five of their seven losses in conference play have been by 25 points or more while only one has been by fewer than 14 points. In the less than three seasons in Chicago, Stubblefield’s teams were 9-38 in Big East play.

DePaul announced Special Assistant to the Head Coach, Matt Brady, will take over as interim coach for the rest of the season. The school announced it will conduct a nationwide search for a permanent replacement once the season is done.
