The Detroit Tigers are coming off of a disappointing season that saw their record drop rather than improve. However, they saw some top prospects make their debuts. Now, they have a lot of news heading into the 2023 season. Check out our Detroit Tigers 2023 Preview:
The biggest news heading into the Tigers 2023 season is that Miguel Cabrera will be retiring afterwards. Yes, it was bound to happen at some point, but it’s still a little sad. Cabrera has long been the face of the franchise in Detroit. However, they have some players looking to make a bounce-back season… if they can, the Tigers may finish with a better record than a season ago. Spencer Torkleson is the biggest name looking to have a bounce back season, he played 110 games batting just .203 with eight homeruns and 23 RBI’s. Javier Baez may also be looking to bounce back after he saw his average plummet under .250.
Though, the Tigers didn’t really make any key additions. They didn’t lose anyone big either. They have Tyler Nevin now, and he’s looking to make a name for himself, the same way his father, Phil Nevin did with the Tigers.
“I’m just really excited for the opportunity to maybe get some more consistent at-bats and prove what I’m capable of,” Tyler said. “That’s all I can hope for, really, is to get that opportunity and hopefully earn my way into that spot.”
As far as the rotation, not much was added either. The Tigers did bring Matthew Boyd back after a season with his hometown, Seattle Mariners. He’s likely to slot in the No. 2 spot in the rotation… though he did well with the Mariners as a reliever, pitching to a 1.35 ERA across 13 innings.
