Devante Parker and the New England Patriots have agreed on a new three-year deal worth up to $33 million, with $14 million guaranteed, Wednesday.
Parker was acquired by the Patriots last offseason from the Miami Dolphins. He amassed 31 receptions and 539 receiving yards in 2022. Parker was used mostly for jump balls given his size and ability to catch “50-50” balls. He’ll continue to be a major part of New England’s offense going forward.
The contract is not a three-year extension. Parker was entering the final year of his deal which would’ve earned him $5.7 million. This is a new three-year deal that will take effect immediately and essentially void his prior contract.
What this means for the Patriots
Many assumed Parker would be cut if Deandre Hopkins were to sign with the Patriots. It’s fair to assume that he may no longer be an option due to this deal. Mike Kadlick of WEEI suggests there is a world where they coexist in this offense.
Devante Parker is not nearly the caliber player that Hopkins is, despite his age. Nonetheless, if Hopkins does sign, Parker will certainly find more single coverage. This could result in a dominant season for him. When healthy, Parker has shown flashes of brilliance. The inconsistency still looms, though.
The Patriots wide receiver room looks healthy with Juju Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton and Kendrick Bourne highlighting the group. Rookie Kayshon Boutte has shown some promise as well. If Hopkins does end up signing as well, the Patriots have a plethora of solid weapons.
