A trade that has been in the works for several days now is complete. The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring RHP Tyler Glasnow and OF Manuel Margot from the Dodgers, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The deal appears to be fairly even based on the fact that both sides get an RHP and an OF. The deal will be contingent on if Glasnow signs an extension with the Dodgers which is expected. Tyler Glasnow was set to be a free agent in 2024 but with the Dodgers looking to lock him up, he may not be for a while.
Glasnow, a tall 6-foot-8 right-hander features a fastball that reaches an average of 96.4 mph two swing-and-miss breaking balls. He ranks third in the MLB in strikeout rate (35.4%) among pitchers who have thrown more than 250 innings. Behind only Jacob deGrom and Spencer Strider. He’s flashed some promising electric stuff, but has been limited by injuries.
Over the course of the season, Glasnow went 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA. He boasted a 2.0 WAR over 120 innings and 21 starts.
Margot will most likely slide in as a platoon partner for Jason Heyward. He’s always had the potential to be something great, but just never capitalized. Margot is a career .281/.341/.420 hitter against left-handed pitchers, compared to a .244/.294/.370 slash line against righties.
The deal makes sense for the Rays, they were going to be entering unmarked territory with their payroll if the retained everyone. Instead, they’ll get two young MLB-Ready players who they’ll have under control for several seasons. Even with the addition of younger talent, the Rays still have their eyes on the present and future. Pepiot is under control until 2028 and DeLuca even longer.
