The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a busy offseason that continues with the signing of Teoscar Hernandez. According to Jeff Passan, it is a one-year deal worth $23.5 Million.
For the better half of the offseason, the Dodgers have been focused on adding to their pitching staff. Throughout, the offseason they have been looking for a right-handed power bat. They landed a deal with one of the best ones available. Hernandez is a former all-star and silver slugger who has hit 147 home runs since the 2018 season.
According to another report by Passan, only $15 Million of that salary will be paid during the 2024 season. The other $8.5 will paid out in installments from 2030-2039. It’s unclear whether Teoscar Hernandez will play in the outfield for the Dodgers, or whether they plan to stick with him at DH. They could use him in both spots to give someone the night off as well.
Hernandez, mostly known for his time in Toronto, spent last season with a Seattle Mariners team that just missed the playoffs. The trade to Seattle resulted in a dip in his production. Over 678 plate appearances, Hernandez only batted .258/.305/.435. His 105 wRC+ was well below what it had been years prior (133). He also recorded 26 home runs and 211 strikeouts. The numbers might be a little worrisome, but their must be some belief that he can return to form.
There’s no question now that the Dodgers have one of the most talented rosters. With the Dodgers, he’ll get to join a contender and possibly win a World Series with the Dodgers. Adding power bats from Shohei Ohtani and Hernandez is only going to make the lineup scarier. The Dodgers already produced a lot of runs en route to 100 wins in the regular season.
