With the addition of superstar Damian Lillard, the Milwaukee Bucks limited the responsibilities for Khris Middleton. He seemingly fell through the rotation with several lower body injuries. As Middleton was once a back-to-back all-star, fans have begun questioning where he stands in Milwaukee’s long-term future.
In 2023, Middleton signed a three-year, $102 million deal to return to the Bucks. This seemed like a bargain for a veteran scorer still in the best shape of his career. Middleton played the x-factor role in Milwaukee’s championship run, and the front office hoped to retain the South Carolina native.
However, the scenery changed with injury and a lack of productivity. Middleton, who was once able to dominate for 82 games consistently, could not remain healthy for the Bucks and their championship aspirations. As a result, conversations around his future with the team must occur through the following season.
If Khris Middleton underperforms, the Milwaukee Bucks must explore the trade market for a new destination.
Although Khris Middleton has been with the Milwaukee Bucks for nearly every season, he could be shipped elsewhere depending on his performance. He is an excellent three-point shooter, but age and health concerns are unfortunately getting the best of him.
Last season, the 12-year veteran played in 55 games, averaging 15.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in 27 minutes per night. The season prior, Middleton appeared in just 33 contests due to different types of wrist and knee injuries. At age 33, it is evident that his body is slowing down over time.
As part of his deal, Middleton has a player option next summer. With $34 million on the table, the Texas A&M product will likely opt in for the last year of his contract. This gives the front office a choice of holding on or searching for a trade around the league.
Nonetheless, Middleton’s time with the Bucks franchise could be coming to a stopping point. Despite embracing the Milwaukee culture and winning the team’s second banner, the front office will soon be headed in a different direction. They may shift their focus to youth and athleticism, leaving Middleton’s future off the grid.
