The Miami Dolphins made a big move this afternoon by signing Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator. According to Tom Pelissero, the deal will make Fangio the highest-paid coordinator on both sides of the ball.

Vic Fangio Coaching History

Vic Fangio was regarded as the top defensive coordinator available for hire this off-season. His coaching career spans four decades. However, his recent stops with the 49ers, Bears, and Broncos prove he’s one of the brightest defensive minds in football.

As a defensive coordinator with the 49ers from 2011-2014, his defense ranked within the top five every year. That resulted in the 49ers making three straight conference championship appearances.

His next stint as defensive coordinator with the Bears from 2015-2018 was another success. Working with a rebuilding team, his defenses ranked in the upper half of the league and steadily improved every season. This culminated in an elite defense led by Khalil Mack in 2018 that ranked first in points allowed. That year Vic Fangio was also named NFL Assistant Head Coach of The Year.

Fangio’s continued success made him an attractive head coaching hire for the Denver Broncos in 2019. He wasn’t successful in his three years in Denver, but the defense was notably the strength of those teams.

This season Fangio has been serving as a defensive consultant with the Eagles.

Miami Dolphins

This brings us to the present day, where he joins a young Miami defense that is full of talent on the defensive line and has several pieces to work with in the secondary. He will also be reuniting with former Broncos defensive end Bradley Chubb, who made the Pro Bowl under him in 2020.

It’s another impressive addition for first-year head coach Mike Mcdaniel, who has put together a coaching staff with some big names. The Dolphins are currently over the cap and do not hold a first-round pick in this year’s draft, so it will be interesting to see what moves they make on defense going forward.
