The fall of the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have represented the model of consistency since 1970. However, we have seen the fall of the Pittsburgh Steelers as of late.

For over 53 years the Steelers have been one of the elite organizations in the NFL. In that time, they have won Six Super Bowls, along with being in contention to win every single year. However, since 2016, the Steelers have been a shell of themselves.

Model of Consistency

Since 1970 the Pittsburgh Steelers have only had three head coaches over this span. (Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Mike Tomlin) all of these guys bringing at least one Super Bowl Championship to Pittsburgh. This includes having the most wins since 1970 with 511 wins. (via Statmuse) In addition, the Steelers haven’t had a losing season since 2003 coincidently that was the year before franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was drafted.

The Steeler way

The Steeler way is a tradition of knowledge being passed down from the older generation to the younger generation. It’s also being selfless and putting the team’s needs ahead of your own. The Steelers never have any major issues in their organization because they snip it in the beginning due to the Steeler way which contributes to their winning seasons year after year. The Steeler Way was helped by future and current hall of famers like Troy Polamalu, Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Greene, and Jerome Bettis just to name a few.

The Fall of the Steelers

With the current problems that are facing coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers, they were hidden for quite some time, thanks to franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The first problem that the Steelers face is their atrocious offense, and were are not talking about the quarterback position yet. The Steelers scheme for the offense just isn’t up to NFL par. Since firing offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner in 2021 after losing in the Wild Card round to their rivals, the Cleveland Browns and the Steelers have gone downhill quickly.

Looking back at it, we owe Randy Fichtner an apology as he looks like he is the scapegoat because the offense has looked much worse under Matt Canada and current interim OCs Eddie Faulkner and Mike Sullivan.

Everyone in the media wanted to also blame Roethlisberger in 2022 despite making the playoffs but I think we can see that all the excuses we wanted to say are just invalid and blasphemous.

With Roethlisberger retiring in 2021, the Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett in hopes of being the successor. However, we are seeing that nobody knows if he could even be an NFL-caliber QB due to the issues that haven’t been fixed thanks to the front office of the Steelers ignoring the play calling and offensive schemes.

Minkah Fitzpatrick calls out Teammates

We are seeing what could be the last domino effect with Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick calling out his teammates saying “They just want to walk out here and think that they’re going to make plays and perform at a high level and wants people who are going to work for it and not be handed to them…” this coming after back to back losses to two of the bottom tier teams in the Cardinals and the Patriots.

After analyzing what Fitzpatrick said, he does have a legitimate point about how the team has played all year long. Mike Tomlin needs to start implementing the old Steeler way by not rewarding bad play and start holding the players accountable like he used to.

Hopefully, in the offseason, the Steelers can fix these issues before it’s too late. But as of now, we are seeing the fall of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
