The Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2023 NFL Draft with needs, despite the phrase “luxury pick” being thrown around. The team does own two first-round picks (No.10 and No. 30), but defensive departures have the Eagles seeking for additions. However, the Eagles love their offensive lineman, and recent reports are suggesting that’s the direction the team could be heading with the tenth pick.
The annual NFL owners meeting was held from March 26-29, and many Eagles reporters flocked to Arizona for coverage. One of the reporters there, Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski, had this to say on BGN Radio about rumblings he heard.
“I came away thinking that offensive line is gonna be—I’d put that number one on my list of most likely positions they’ll address with their first pick,” Kempski said.
Drafting offensive line fits the bill and reflects the organization’s draft philosophy correctly. The idea has always been to prioritize the offensive and defensive line. Last year it was the defensive line. This year? It could very well be the offensive lines turn.
Smoke screens happen every year, so take this with a grain of salt. But correspondingly, Jordan Schultz reported that after the matter that the Eagles hosted Northwestern’s Peter Skoronski for a Top 30 visit. This, of course, sent Eagles’ twitter into hysteria. It’s not the most flashy pick, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a good one.
Skoronski would be the ideal candidate if the Eagles’ brass decided to use their first pick on OL depth. Though you may be questioning why they would draft offensive line with big needs on defense. Let me explain. Skoronski is a versatile tackle who has the ability to transition into guard. The 6-foot-4, 315 pound prospect slotted in as the Wildcat’s left tackle. However, due to his short arms and high level of mobility, the Eagles would plausibly move him to guard. This is a consensus thought among NFL teams, as Skoronski said he has already received multiple questions about where he envisions himself playing.
“No one has really sat me down and said, ‘No, you can’t play tackle for us,” Skoronski said. “Teams have just kind of asked me where I see myself, and I said that I’m a tackle. I play tackle, but I am more than willing to play anywhere. Teams talk about versatility for sure, too. If they move me to guard, I’m happy to do that. No one has really said, ‘You have to play guard. You can’t play tackle.’ No one has really boxed me in, which I’m pretty pleased about.”
Jason Kelce has one year left and after that, Cam Jurgens will most likely take over at center. Not to mention the Eagles just lost Isaac Seumalo, who signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Drafting Skoronski with the intention to sit a year and learn from Philly’s vets and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland may not be a bad idea.
The former Northwestern Wildcat found much success during his collegiate career, and is expected to be the first offensive lineman in April’s draft. Recent events now make it seem like Skoronski is a real possibility to be selected by Philadelphia. The reality is, though, that no one knows what the Eagles will do. We’ll just have to wait to see who the Eagles draft.
