The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts have agreed to a contract extension that makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the deal is a five-year, $255 million extension that includes $179.304 million guaranteed. The contract also includes a no-trade clause — a first in Eagles history, according to Rapoport. Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn of Klutch Sports, negotiated the deal with Eagles vice president/general manager Howie Roseman.

All signs pointed to a massive contract extension for the superstar. After a full two years at the helm of Philadelphia’s offense, Hurts exceeded all expectations.

Drafted in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft, Hurts, 24 years old, started four games in his rookie year but supplanted Carson Wentz for the full-time role the following season. In his second season with the team, they got a taste of the playoffs, but were ultimately eliminated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His third season — his best season —was comprised of MVP-like play. He threw for 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions on a completion percentage of 66.5%. He added 760 yards and 13 touchdowns rushing. He finished second in MVP voting — behind Patrick Mahomes, was named second-team All-Pro and was voted into his first Pro Bowl.

Hurts’ guaranteed money is now second-most to Deshaun Watson‘s fully guaranteed contract with the Cleveland Browns. Watson earned a five-year, $230 million contract with the team last year.

Back in January, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had this to say about his quarterback.

“I know this is high praise, but to have him out there is like having, I shouldn’t even go there, but is like having Michael Jordan out there.”

Here are what some of Hurts current and former teammates had to say about his extension.
