England vs Senegal Match Reaction

The Three Lions went marching into the Round of 16 after beating Senegal by three goals to nil. Goals from Kane, Saka and Henderson sealed the deal for England.

1st Half

Boulaye Dia raced into the penalty box in the third minute but it was eventually gathered by Pickford after a heavy touch from the FC Salernitana forward.

England then went on to dominate possession for the best part of 20 minutes but without posing much threat to Edouard Mendy and Senegal’s defense.

Senegal eventually grew in confidence and their efforts started to be rewarded. Dia’s flick on after Diatta’s dangerous cross was saved. The rebound fell to Sarr but he fired it over the bar from close range.

Dia registered the first shot on target from either side in the 30th minute. Sarr found his strike partner after a powerful run but his shot was saved by Pickford.

In the 38th minute, England took the lead against the run of play. Kane found Bellingham who made a deep run from midfield. He then cut it back to Jordan Henderson who gave his team the lead on the night.

Soon after, Kane had his first chance of the match but was off balance and hit the ball over the bar.

Kane rarely misses two chances in a row and he doubled his team’s lead with his second chance. Jude Bellingham started a magnificent counter attack, found Foden who played it first time to Kane. He took a touch before burying his first goal of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Senegal needed a big second half performance if they wanted to turn this tie around.

2nd Half

The first chance of the second half came in the 53rd minute. Saka’s right footed shot went wide of Mendy’s goal.

Two minutes later, Harry Kane’s fizzer from 30 yards out was saved by Mendy.

The two young wingers, Saka and Foden combined for England’s third. Foden’s low driven cross found Saka who cheekily dinked it over Mendy to score his third goal of the tournament.

Pape Sarr’s free kick from 30 yards out nearly curled past the wall but into the side netting.

Southgate’s men are now in the quarter finals and it doesn’t get any easier from here as they play the defending champions, France.
