Bill Belichick Patriots

The coaching world has gone crazy over the last two days. First with Pete Carroll being removed as the coach in Seattle, then Nick Saban announcing his retirement and now with Bill Belichick officially out of New England, it’s clear that he still wants to coach, but it begs the question: Which teams are potential landing spots? The most important thing to note is that Belichick will likely go somewhere where he can win. At 71 years old, its unlikely for him to coach a young team that is in the midst of a rebuild. Here we will be going over the top five spots that may see Belichick coaching their team next season.

Los Angeles Chargers

It wasn’t very long ago, that the Chargers finally parted ways with Brandon Staley. Out of all the landing spots that Bill Belichick could go to, this one would give him the best ability to win. We’ve seen what he’s been able to do with a quarterback like Tom Brady who was selected in the sixth round of 2000 NFL Draft. He could likely win a few times with Justin Herbert as well before stepping off the sidelines for the final time. Herbert is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL when healthy. The sky would be the limit for LA if a winning culture was built around Herbert. They would be able to compete with the Chiefs in the AFC West.

Las Vegas Raiders

It seems likely that they will stay with Antonio Pierce, but I wouldn’t count them out of the Belichick sweepstakes. They have key building blocks on both sides of the ball. The quarterback situation would be a bit rocky. Right now, they have Aidan O’Connell but it’s not likely they stick with him long-term. They could opt to to sign a quarterback in free agency or add one through the draft. With so much uncertainty, this option is probably the most unlikely.

Alabama Crimson Tide

With Nick Saban retiring and Dan Lanning shutting the rumors down about him taking the job. I’m not going to leave this out of the question. The Crimson Tide want a winning formula and Belichick would bring that. He probably is a little older than they would want their coach to be, but he still wants to coach. That’s the key thing here. If he was hired by Alabama, he likely wouldn’t be there long. Neither will any young coach if they can’t follow up on the culture that Saban created. In reality, it probably won’t happen but he’d fulfill the needs to continue the winning culture.

Atlanta Falcons

Another spot that has building blocks, but no quarterback. Desmond Ridder clearly is not the answer. Belichick would get the most out of and utilize the talents of Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts. Something that Arthur Smith was unable to do. Owner Arthur Blank is in the hunt for a coach with a proven track record. There’s no coaches on the market, with a better track record than Belichick.

Washington Commanders

With a new ownership coming in, its unclear what the goals are. If they are to win, then Bill Belichick would be the perfect guy to replace Ron Rivera. It could also be looked at as a homecoming. FedEx Field is just 30 minutes away from where Belichick was born and raised. Coaching several seasons for his hometown team would be a great way for him to go out.
