With a star studded duo of Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks were looking to capitalize on spacing in free agency. The front office wasted no time and signed Taurean Prince, an exceptional shooter from beyond the arc. While many assumed the Bucks were complete, they secured Gary Trent Jr. on a one-year deal.

Before starting free agency, Trent Jr. was viewed as one of the top players available. He specializes in scoring in all aspects of the game, with a tenacity to move off the ball and sink open threes. This is what Milwaukee needs next to Lillard and Antetokounmpo. 

The 25-year-old former Blue Devil brings a critical experience. He has fought the challenges of being a second-round pick to one of the league’s most prolific three-point threats. There is no doubt Trent Jr’s contributions will be highly valued.

Gary Trent Jr. will dominate in any role for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Regardless of Gary Trent Jr.’s role, he will thrive for head coach Doc Rivers and the Milwaukee Bucks. There will be several wide-open looks in the starting lineup, with defenses focusing on Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Off the bench, he could win Sixth Man of the Year by showing excellence on both ends of the floor.

Last season for Toronto, the former 37th overall pick finished with 13.7 points and 2.6 boards while shooting 39.3% from three on 6.4 attempts. These numbers will likely rise with a minute increase in Milwaukee’s active rotation.

Defensively, Trent Jr. has flipped the switch from sub-par to underrated. He has excellent size for a wing with a frame that allows him to guard his position. Though he will not be asked to take on the top offensive talents, he can hold his own when switching through different positions.

That said, the Bucks signed a playoff riser to one of the best contracts in the NBA. He will come alive when Rivers needs him most, posing no health concerns for a run at the championship. Trent Jr. will inevitably flourish in the Milwaukee spotlight.
