George Mason upsets No.20 Maryland in a close back-and-forth game of 71-66. D’Shawn Schwartz scored game high 24 points and Davonte Gaines with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Maryland they was led by Donta Scott with 18 points.

What went wrong for Maryland?

During the first half, the Terrapins got off for a significant early lead of 14-5, with 5 points by Eric Ayala during that run. After getting that early 9-point lead, No. 20 Maryland allowed George Mason to shoot 50% from the three-point-line (12 for 24). What also doesn’t help Maryland was going only 7-for-28 from the three-point line. For the third straight game, Maryland has shot below 32% from the three-point-line. Only two players in the starting lineup scored in double-digits. Maryland’s defense kept them in the game until the middle of the second half, when George Mason started getting hot.

What a story for George Mason, with their transfers playing 33 minutes each, including Devon Cooper and Davonte Gaines, and with 38 minutes by D’Shawn Schwartz. In George Mason’s last three games, they have shot at least 44% from the three-point-line, which includes 12 three’s made, to build their most significant lead of the game at ten. After Maryland brought the lead down to only one, George Mason finished the game on a 5-0 run with a layup by Josh Oduro, and two clutch free throws by Davonte Gaines. The Patriots are motivated and will hope to stay hot against another hot team of James Madison.

Final Takeaways

Maryland: Maryland will no longer stay ranked in the top 25. They will hope to get some significant wins against Virginia Tech (3-0) and No. 24. Florida (2-0) in December before Big Ten Conference play begins.

George Mason: George Mason should have a great chance of making the NCAA Tournament. The next ranked opponent, the Patriots, will face is No. 23 St. Bonaventure in January, unless St. Bonaventure loses between now and January.
