Georgetown hires Ed Cooley

Georgetown University Athletics formally announced former Providence Friar’s head coach Ed Cooley as their next head basketball coach.

Cooley, 53, spent 12 years at Providence College before deciding to accept an offer from Big East rival Georgetown. The Friars won a Big East conference championship and a Big East regular season championship during his tenure, while guiding them to seven NCAA tournaments. The Friars ranked as high as No. 8 in the AP poll during those 12 seasons, which occurred twice.

Georgetown has had a brutal few seasons, as former head coach Patrick Ewing struggled to find success leading his alma mater. Ewing spent six seasons at Georgetown, winning only six and seven games in the last two seasons, respectively. Georgetown did have a miracle resurgence in 2021, winning the Big East tournament and qualifying for the NCAA tournament, despite having a 13-13 record during the regular season.

What’s next for Georgetwon

This change came at a cost for the university. Reports are saying that Ewing was owed as much as $14.9 million after the firing. Some are saying it was as little as $6 million. Nonetheless, Georgetown was forced to cough up money for their coach on the way out, while offering Ed Cooley close to $6 million per season.

Georgetown held a press conference introducing Cooley, Wednesday. His overwhelming confidence inspired a crowd of media and Georgetown faculty and staff.

One can expect Cooley to turn this program into a more successful program. Ed Cooley at Georgetown is widely expected to put the program back on the map nationally. As for Providence, worry looms as to what’s next for their program.
