Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse for the New York Giants, it does. Quarterback Daniel Jones has been shut down for the remainder of the season due to his neck injury, the team announced Monday.

“We felt the prudent decision was to place Daniel on injured reserve for the remainder of the season,” the team wrote in a statement. “With continued rest and treatment, we expect a full recovery.”

There is optimism that the injury is not expected to affect Jones’ long-term.

Jones has missed the last three games with a neck injury he suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 12. He will miss the final three games of the season against the Eagles, Chicago Bears, and Washington Football Team.

The neck injury is also Jones’ second injury this season. He also suffered a concussion before halftime against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5 but returned the following week against the Rams. In 2020, he also missed time with injuries.

Giants’ backup Mike Glennon took over the starting role in his absence but has not had any success. As a result, the team is 0-3 without Jones. Glennon threw three interceptions against the Cowboys Sunday. Jake Fromm replaced him in what was his Giants/ NFL debut, going six of 12 for 82 yards. Fromm has a good chance of starting next week.

Jones has a completion percentage of 64.3 percent this season for 2,428 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also has a passer rating of 84.8. His career completion percentage through three seasons is 62.8 percent, with 8,398 yards, 45 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, and an 84.3 passer rating.

The Giants have big decisions to make this off-season regarding Jones’ future. If the Giants exercise his fifth-year option on his rookie contract then they have to pay him an estimate of $21 million. Jones has not shown any sign of progress since his rookie season.

At this moment, it is unclear what the team will do. Some rumors suggest they could try to trade for a quarterback instead of resigning Jones.
