After the Carolina Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule, their search for a new head coach has begun. Multiple other head coaches will be fired after the NFL season. There has already been a name that has been brought up as a head coach candidate. San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans has been on the radar since last season. Ryans is young for a potential head coach at 38. He has risen up the ranks in the 49ers staff and continues to prove himself.
Demeco Ryans Qualifications
Ryans resume since he became the 49ers defensive coordinator in 2021 has been impressive. In the 2021 season , Ryans coached his defense to the fifth-ranked scoring defense, allowing just 20.6 points per game. Through five games in the 2022 season, Ryans has his defense as the best in the league in scoring (12.2), yards per play (4.0), and yards per game (249.2). It is likely his defense will not stay this hot. But, as long as he keeps them playing at a high level, he will be a head coach next season.
Ryans has done a great job with putting his players in a position to succeed. There is a lot of talent on that side of the ball, but, he moves players around and lets them play to their strengths. The best example of this is second-year standout safety Talanoa Hufanga. He has moved him around the field and allows him to blitz and play coverage, where he excels at both.
Interest in Coach Ryans
Ryans has been around the NFL since 2006 when he was drafted. He played 10 years in the NFL, took a year off in 2016, and has been on the 49ers staff since 2017. Ryans interviewed for a head coaching job in the 2022 offseason with the Las Vegas Raiders and Minnesota Vikings. It is very early in the season, but, it is safe to expect Ryans will have even more interest when the offseason begins and teams are searching for their next head coach.
