How could Barca mess it all up

As the football world experienced one of the most dramatic days yesterday. It still is hard to grasp the information. Lionel Messi is no longer a Barcelona player. You think you would never hear those words. But as of yesterday it happened. Fans all over across the world are still taking in the news. Barcelona fans are absolutely devastated as their star player who has been at the club since he was 13 is gone.

Where did it all go wrong

I believe where it went wrong is the Barcelona’s board poor financial judgement. Over-spending on overrated talent. And poor performances. Some prime examples of Barcelona’s poor transfer activity are. Phillip Coutinho from Liverpool, Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, etc. Those three players cost them a whopping 386 million euros. And all of those signings have done absolutely nothing for the club. Amassing them with a debt over 800 million euros.

Due to La Liga rules there is a salary cap limit that each of the teams have to meet. Since Barcelona are in such great debt. Although they made new signings like Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, etc. They can’t be registered for the season. And for Barcelona to meet those orders. They would have to sell some players. As they struggled to make ends meet. They agreed a new contract for Messi. Who’s contract expired in July. But as of yesterday, La Liga prohibited Barcelona from resigning Mess. Although they managed to come to an agreement with Messi. They haven’t meet the league registration rules. So, they have no choice but to let him go.

Poor Financial Management has ruined Barcelona. In their hopes of getting new players for expensive fees or even renewing people’s contracts. When the pandemic hit. Barca’s finances took massive toll in which multiple players had to take salary cuts. Messi was going to be one of them. With his new contract, he was supposed to take a huge salary cut.

What’s Next

Well certainly the Barcelona fans are heartbroken. But what will be next for them is a Messi-less era. They definitely will miss the Argentinian magician as he dazzled everyones hearts. Barcelona need to get their finances set before making any new and more expensive signings. They need to be careful with their finances to ensure they avoid a situation of Messi’s again.
