How Did The Warriors Get Back On Top?

The Dynasty lives on. Stephen Curry and the Warriors have found themselves once again being crowned champions of the NBA, the fourth time since 2015 to be exact. It is unbelievable just how they got back here in the short two year span since losing to the Raptors. How did they manage to rebuild all the way back to the top?

Losses

It’s no question that the Warriors had lost some key pieces since their last Finals appearance, with a key one being the loss of Klay Thompson to ACL and Achilles injuries, keeping him out the last two seasons and the beginning of this season. They also lost Andre Iguodala, Kevin Durant, and Steph for a season, leading to the worst record in the NBA in 2019-2020 (15-50). The other big loss for Golden State was that of James Wiseman, who was in the running for rookie of the year before his injury that has kept him out since. It seemed to be the end of the line for the Warriors, and no one saw what was coming down the road.

Gains

What the Warriors lost in terms of talent, added back in youth and talent combined. The Warriors drafted the likes of Wiseman, Jordan Poole, Kevon Looney (2015), Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga, while also aquiring Otto Porter Jr., Gary Payton II, Juan Toscano-Anderson, Damian Lee, Andrew Wiggins, and D’Angelo Russell (for a short period of time) through trades and signings. All of which have had pivotal roles in contributing to the success of the Warriors. Steph came back healthy, Klay returned, Draymond was a front runner for DPOY until his midseason injury, Poole shined late in the season, and Andrew Wiggins just kept getting better and better. If you were to give a second place Finals MVP award it would go to Wiggins.

Warriors Set For The Future?

Now that they have returned to the top, where do they go from here? The biggest need is to figure out how to keep your young core together. They are gaining valuable experience, and are binding together. Steph has shown he still has stuff in the tank, Klay can still be lethal, and Andrew Wiggins is only 27. There are already talks about an extension for him, which is deserved. the biggest question mark is with Draymond Green. What is he going to do? I think he will play another season, but how good will he be? Will Klay decide to move on from Golden State or will he commit to keeping the band together? There are plenty of questions the Warriors will need to answer this offseason.
