A year ago, Fantasy Football owners drafted Chiefs’ WR Skyy Moore with the expectation that he would be Patrick Mahomes’ new go-to target. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen last season, but could he be a breakout WR candidate in 2023?
Skyy Moore’s 2023 Fantasy Projection:
Moore is about as good of a prospect as it gets. A good athlete who was dominant in college. With second-round draft capital and an ideal landing spot, the stage was set for Moore to matter right away.
Outside of the truly elite prospects like Justin Jefferson or Ja’Marr Chase, rookies typically will meander until late in the season when they become acclimated with the NFL. That’s what owners were expecting from Moore last year.
Moore landed on a roster with arguably the best quarterback to ever play and a very climbable depth chart without a true WR1, and only one receiver even worthy of being a WR2 in JuJu Smith-Schuster. Bad rookie production is a red flag when it comes to that player’s long-term outlook. For Moore to play with Patrick Mahomes on a roster with Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Mecole Hardman as the two guys in front of him yet fail to even jump Justin Watson on the depth chart is a scathing indictment of Moore as a prospect.
Moore was unable to earn more than 50% of snaps in a single game. Even with Hardman getting hurt and missing half the season, there was no increase in playing time. He ran a route on just 24% of the Chiefs’ passing plays.
Should you draft Skyy Moore?
Once again, Moore has an easy roster to climb. The receivers on the roster this season include Moore, MVS, Kadarius Toney, Richie James, and rookie Rashee Rice. Somehow, the competition is a bit weaker.
In a Dynasty league, you can probably afford to make some mistakes and the rosters are deeper. You probably would be okay to draft Moore, but in a buy-in league or a season-by-season league. The move is too risky. Moore recorded just 250 receiving yards as a rookie. As a blanket rule, if you take every Day 1 or Day 2 rookie receiver who doesn’t reach 500 receiving yards and throw them out, you will be correct over 90% of the time.
I still like Skyy Moore as a prospect, the fantasy silver lining as a WR55, No. 151 overall ADP is actually quite reasonable.
