Iowa Hawkeyes took on Maryland Terrapins, and it wasn’t even a close game. Iowa won 51 to 14, and their defense forced seven turnovers. This game was the biggest win of the season. It was Maryland’s fewest points scored and the first loss of the season. This game will hopefully push Iowa into the top 4.

Iowa Hawkeyes Dominant Defense

Iowa Hawkeyes defense had another dominant performance again against Maryland. They had created seven turnovers, and six of them were interceptions. The defense held a team in the top five for passing yards to only 174 passing yards. They also only allowed two touchdown passes and only 97 rushing yards. The biggest thing about the six interceptions is that six different players all had one. Kaevon Merriweather and Riley Moss both had interceptions, and they also had the most tackles on the team. Their defense showed everyone once again that they are one of the best defenses in the country.

Maryland’s Offensive Struggles

Maryland has had a great offensive season heading into this game, but Iowa is the first defense they faced who is good. Taulia Tagovailoa is a passing powerhouse and was in the top three for passing yards and had only one interception coming into this game. In this game, he only had 167 passing yards and two touchdowns. Those stats are not the real surprising ones, the five interceptions and three in the first half. Maryland ended up putting the second-string quarterback at the end of the game. Reece Udinski had only 17 passing yards and also threw an interception. Maryland won the first four games by passing the ball for over 300 yards but didn’t seem like they were a 4-0 team in this game.

Iowa Hawkeyes Finding More Of Their Offense

Iowa Hawkeyes seems to be an elite defensive team, but their offense plays outstanding as while. Spencer Petras had 259 passing yards on 21 completions and also added three passing and two rushing touchdowns. Their offense had a total of 428 yards, 145 rushing yards, and 283 passing yards. This game was the most points that Iowa has scored all year and against a Big Ten opponent. They made good use of their running backs in the passing game and made Maryland’s defense not be able to find its footing.

Final Thoughts

Iowa once again looks like they are just getting better and better every week. This game has shown that they can finally score more with their offense. Maryland looks like they are not at the level of Iowa. They played lower teams in the first few weeks and could win and get yards on those teams, but Iowa is different. Iowa’s defense was fresh almost every time they were on the field, and Maryland’s defense could barely get off the field. Iowa is a force to be reckoned with and will continue to get better.
