The worst case scenario has just become a reality for the Texas Rangers and Jacob DeGrom. Per Evan Grant on Twitter, the right hander starting pitcher will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL. This is a huge blow for the Rangers as he has only made six starts this season.
The Texas Rangers signed Jacob DeGrom to a five-year, $185M contract over the winter in hopes to bolster their elite rotation. However, after this news of DeGrom needing Tommy John, he is set to return in 2025. This means Texas will be paying for the first two years of his contract with only six starts made. That’s $74M for six starts, or $12.3M per start.
This is unfortunate to see for any baseball fan. DeGrom was on pace for a possible first-ballot hall of fame candidacy. However due to his unfortunate history of injuries compounded with now needing Tommy John, his hall of fame case is not guaranteed anymore.
Losing DeGrom is a Tough Blow For This Rangers Squad
The Rangers are having a great year so far. They currently have the second-best record in baseball just behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Newly acquired starter, Nathan Eovaldi, is having a career year with a 2.24 ERA and an early Cy Young candidacy. The offense is absolutely mashing right now, as well. They currently lead the MLB in run differential with +155.
This is a sight all too familiar for Met’s fans, who know this feeling well. Injuries have plagued Jacob DeGrom for years now, but this is what everyone was fearing the whole time. It will be a sad two years without watching DeGrom start every fifth day and deal like the ace he is.
