According to Tony Massarotti from Boston’s 98.5 The Sports Hub, quarterback Jarrett Stidham has been placed on the physically unable to perform list (the PUP list). He is not injured. I repeat, he is NOT injured. This move is being made to to give 2021 first round pick Mac Jones more opportunities as training camp approaches.
Why You Should Care
Stidham before Cam Newton was signed was looking like he was going to be the guy. A fourth round pick from Auburn, he was looking good as Tom Brady’s backup in camp and practice. He went in to 2020 in prime position to be the heir apparent. When Newton was brought in, Stidham fell out of favor with the coaching staff. There were multiple reports of why, we’ll save time and not mess around with those.
Now, Jarrett Stidham is likely getting traded or cut. Mac Jones is now in a head to head race with Newton to be the starting QB for the Patriots. Furthermore, Houston has inquired about trading for him in the past. But, there have been no new reports about that lately. According to multiple reports, Jones has performed very well in camp and a QB competition is coming.
Finally, it is important to note that it had been said from the very beginning that there would be no competition between the QBs. But, clearly that has changed and Stidham now finds himself out of the mix. This is a surprising move and story that we will continue to follow.
