Jasson Dominguez Expected to Undergo TJ Surgery

The New York Yankees’ top prospect Jasson Dominguez was putting on a show after being called up. Weeks later though, the 20-year-old went down with an injury. Now the Yankees have received more unfortunate news regarding their young star. Dominguez is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss around 9-10 months.

MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch was the first to report the news:

“It’s definitely very shocking news,” Domínguez said recently after he was diagnosed with a torn UCL, per Hoch. “You’re never expecting for this to be the result. Now, understanding what happened, we have to look forward and go through it.”

Dominguez sported a batting line of .258/.303/.677 during his 31 plate appearances in the MLB this year. The power was probably the most impressive part of his brief stint posting a .980 OPS, four home runs. He had become the youngest player in Yankees history to homer in their MLB debut. Definitely a young player the Yankees can be excited about for the future. One that would pair nicely with Aaron Judge.

By calling Dominguez the Yankees have already burned some of his service time. This now means that Dominguez will burn a full year and the organization only got 31 plate appearances out of it. New York probably lost an entire year of control by this move. The positive news is it won’t ruin his status as a rookie. He’d technically still be classified as a rook when he returns to the field.

To qualify as a rookie in Major League Baseball (MLB), a player must not have exceeded 130 at bats or fifty innings pitched in the majors, and also fewer than 45 days on the active rosters of major league clubs (excluding time on the disabled list or any time after rosters are expanded on September 1).

Jasson Dominguez won’t exceed that until after his return.
