Jeimer Candelario

The busy offseason continues for the Cincinnati Reds as Jeimer Candelario has agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal. According to Mark Feisand, who had the first report. Afterward, Jeff Passan was the first to report the specifics of the deal.

Candelario is coming off one of the finest seasons of his MLB career. The former Cubs third baseman turned in a .251/.336/.471 batting line with 22 home runs (career high), 39 doubles and three triples. Many teams were interested in acquiring Jeimer Candelario, but it appears the Reds were the ones to get the job done.

The deal includes a team option for a fourth year. That team option is reportedly worth $15 Million, which would put the total value at $60 Million. Candelario joins a crowded infield that already consists of Elly De La Cruz, Noelvi Marte, Matt McLain, Jonathan India and Spencer Steer.

The Reds were linked to Candelario several weeks ago. With the addition of Candelario, Steer is likely to find himself either in the outfield or in a utility role. It’s likely that Candelario, De La Cruz, McLain and Christian Encarnacio-Strand are all significantly lined up for significant playing time. This would potentially line up Marte and India to be on the trade block or getting DH reps. That would be how the switch-hitting third baseman would fit in.

The Cubs, who were one of the teams in on Candelario, now find themselves without an everyday third baseman.

The latest deal with the Reds is still pending the physical, but over the past couple of days they have spent a large amount of money, $87 million to be exact, in the hopes of contending in 2024. They have signed starter Nick Martinez and bullpen arm Emilio Pagan. Though, if they want to compete they are still missing some starting pitching. Maybe they could trade Marte or India for a young starter.
