The New England Patriots announced that linebackers coach Jerod Mayo is in discussion to remain with the Patriots long-term and interviewing for an offensive coordinator this week.
The Patriots released the following statement: “The New England Patriots and Head Coach Bill Belichick have begun contract extension discussions with Jerod Mayo that would keep him with the team long-term. In addition, the team will begin interviewing for offensive coordinator candidates beginning next week.”
Mayo has been the linebackers coach since 2019 and played linebacker for the Patriots from 2008-2015.
Jerod Mayo has become one of the most sought-after young coaches in the league and was requested to be interviewed by the Carolina Panthers for the head coach vacancy earlier today. Now, New England will make sure Mayo stays within the Patriots organization.
The Patriots currently don’t have either an offensive or defensive coordinator, as head coach Bill Belichick never named the positions, meaning that Jerod Mayo will likely keep his role as linebackers coach.
Regarding offensive coordinator, the Patriots will undergo a search after the playcalling duo of offensive line coach Matt Patricia and quarterbacks coach Joe Judge performed poorly in the 2022 season. The current job favorite is Alabama offensive coordinator and former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.
After leaving New England, O’Brien went on to head coach Penn State for two years before returning to the NFL to head coach the Houston Texans from 2014-2020. O’Brien would be fired by Houston and return back to college to be alongside Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
The Patriots, who came up short of making the playoffs on Jan. 8, have plans to maintain their defensive superiority and revitalize the offense after a lackluster season.
