After receiving permission to speak with the New York Jets, team officials are now flying out to Green Bay to meet with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, according to Ian Rapoport.
While no deal is imminent, the two teams could come to an agreement on a trade that would ultimately send Rodgers to AFC.
Rodgers has made no announcements regarding his decision to play football or not. Evidently, there are three options on the table for the quarterback: he could retire, he could return to the Green Bay Packers, or he could request a trade. However, after the NFL Combine, Rich Eisen reported whispers about the Packers hoping Rodgers decides to leave.
There are complications to a future deal, though. Rodgers recently signed a massive contract extension last March. This extension made him the highest-paid player in the NFL. Also, the deal holds Rodgers under contract with Green Bay through the 2024 season. His deal includes $59.5 million guaranteed for this upcoming season.
Rodgers has spent his entire career with the Packers since being drafted 24th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Furthermore, this request comes days after the New Orleans Saints signed free agent Derek Carr to a four-year, $150 million contract. Carr had an interest in playing for the Jets but ultimately ended up with the Saints.
The Jets had struggled at the quarterback position last season, which led them to another season of missing playoffs. Former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson has not played as they hoped, and are now focused on bringing in a veteran and developing Wilson into a backup role.
The four-time MVP could provide the play needed to make a deep run in the playoffs, and it appears Jets players are on board. Star cornerback Sauce Gardner was quick to take to Twitter after seeing reports of his team meeting with Rodgers.
Conclusively, a deal that sends Rodgers to New York would be beneficial for both sides. For the Jets, it gives the team its missing piece. For Green Bay, it allows the team to dump off Rodgers’ contract and prepare for a future with Jordan Love.
