The New York Jets are expected to trade Zach Wilson in the offseason, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Wilson, who is just 24 years old, currently has one more year remaining on his four-year, $35.1 million rookie contract he signed with the Jets in 2021. New York selected Wilson with the second overall pick in 2021 in hopes of him becoming the team’s franchise quarterback.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Jets told Wilson their plan to seek a trade for him when he was benched weeks ago, and that played a part in why Wilson did not want to be the starter again.
The Jets benched Wilson after their Week 11 loss to the Bills. He then regained the starting role in Week 14. Reports surfaced that Wilson was reluctant to return as the starter, but he and coach Robert Saleh denied those reports.
Wilson missed New York’s final game of the season against the New England Patriots with a concussion suffered against the Dolphins in Week 15. The Jets placed Wilson on injured reserve Saturday. Trevor Siemian was the starter in the season finale, as the Jets ended the season with a 17-3 victory over New England.
The Jets looking to trade Zach Wilson does not come as a surprise, as many expected this to be the case with Aaron Rodgers’ return next season. Wilson started 11 games this season while Rodgers recovered from a torn Achilles he suffered in Week 1. In those 11 starts, Wilson went 4-7 with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Wilson has played three seasons with the Jets since the team drafted him. In his 33 career starts, Wilson is 12-21 with 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. The Jets have finished with double-digit losses in each of the last three seasons.
