Just one day after the New Year, the New York Jets are waiving Dalvin Cook just before the last game of the season according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

After Cook chose to not restructure his contract in Minnesota, the Vikings “Surprisingly” released him prior to the 2023 season. While waiting a couple of months to sign, Cook chose the Jets with a chance to make a deep playoff run, something that he wasn’t able to do in Minnesota.

It seemed as if things were finally looking up for the Jets franchise after 12 years of being a laughingstock of the NFL. In the offseason, they added many big names including Aaron Rodgers and Cook.

Underperforming

Signing Cook, the Jets looked to have a highly talented running back room on paper. However, entering Week 18 the Jets are ranked 19th in rushing yards. After only playing 202 snaps resulting in all-career lows for Cook, along with everything happening in the Jets organization with injuries and lack of performances week in and week out. Cook was unable to get remotely close to the number of snaps a player of his caliber should get.

Looking at this move it could work out for both sides, Cook has a chance to get more playing time while the Jets can go out and draft a late running back who can develop and be a much better fit within Hackett’s system.

In addition, with the Jets parting ways with Cook in the final week of the season, Cook is now eligible to sign with a playoff contender. From my perspective, the best landing spots for Cook to land with are the Baltimore Ravens or the Buffalo Bills.

Potential Landing Spots

Baltimore doesn’t have a true number one from my perspective, although they have running backs who can create space while Cook can work as a pass catcher. This would help give Lamar Jackson another weapon to use during his MVP-caliber season.

For Buffalo, many think he would love to team up with his brother and could be used as a third-down running back. He would also be able to play with a top-tier quarterback talent in Josh Allen. In the end, the Jets waiving Dalvin Cook could be a move that has a chance to change one team’s fortune in the playoffs.
