A long-awaited title fight between former Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic and current title holder Jon Jones is now scheduled for UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden.
Jones is widely considered the greatest mixed martial artist of all time and recently captured the Heavyweight Championship with a first-round submission win over Ciry Gane (11-2) in March. Miocic holds victories over multiple former champions and is regarded as one of the greatest Heavyweights in promotional history.
Having competed most recently in March of 2021, Miocic has been away from the sport for a short time. Although Miocic hasn’t been actively competing, Jones also took three years away from the sport before capturing the Heavyweight title. Following his knockout loss to Francis Ngannou, Miocic has stayed out of the public spotlight but his return is a massive announcement for fight fans.
Training out of Cleveland, Miocic is a part-time firefighter for the Cleveland Fire Department and is 41 years old. Jones is in the prime of his career at 35 years old and will be a significant betting favorite in this contest. Miocic presents an interesting threat to Jones due to his ability to defend the takedown.
In his trilogy with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, Miocic stuffed the Olympic wrestler’s takedown attempts and forced him to fight on the feet. Miocic will need to employ a similar gameplan against Jones if he wants to find regain his title. We did not see much of Jones striking in his return and it will be interesting to see if Miocic can force the champion to fight where he is less comfortable.
Rest of the Card Unannounced
UFC 295 will take place in New York City on November 11th. This Massive Main Event will be one of the most anticipated fights for the rest of 2023. Jones and Miocic are all-time greats who are both future Hall of Famers. The UFC is yet to announce any fight other than the Main Event for UFC 295. Undoubtedly the UFC will build an exciting card around this Main Event. We will keep you updated as news breaks regarding this event. UFC 295 marks the sixth time the promotion held an event at Madison Square Garden Arena.
