When it comes to the Mariner’s prospects, many fans and outsiders think of the big names Jarred Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez, Logan Gilbert, Emerson Hancock, George Kirby, Noelvi Marte, and many others. Though when thinking about the Mariner’s prospects, there is one name that is always forgotten. That is Jonatan Clase.
About Jonatan Clase
Clase signed on with the Mariners as an international Free Agent through the International Player Pool on July 2nd, 2018. He was born May 23rd, 2002 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is currently in just his second year at the professional level. When the Mariners signed him the “17-year-old Clase, who was listed at his signing at five-foot-eight and 150 pounds, his physical stature certainly played a role in him being overlooked by all but a few teams. However, a year into his career as a pro—and twenty pounds of lean muscle heavier and an inch taller at 5’9.5″, Jonatan Clase is out to prove that despite his shorter stature, his talent is too big to ignore.”
This season Jonatan Clase is in his first season stateside, and he may be the fastest prospect in the Mariners farm system.
For Clase, there is no try. It is succeed or fail. There is no try.
Why Mariners Fans Need To Stop Forgetting About Him?
Not only is Jonatan Clase a speedster when it comes to getting doubles and triples, he is a speedster on the bases. In 2019, he had 31 Stolen Bases in the DSL across 63 games. But, not only is he a speedster, he is also continuing to put on muscle. With how young this kid is, he has the potential to be 30+ HR, 30+ SB player for the Mariners. Now, at the ripe age of just 19 and only playing in one professional season in the States, Clase is a little ways away from the MLB. His projected ETA is 2024, which for measures is just a year after Noelvi Marte is projected to make his debut. One year before Harry Ford.
Clase is a left handed-hitter. But could he become a switch hitter? Well he did just take an at-bat from the right side. Needless to say he made some good contact.
Clase may be a few years away though he seems to be on a fast-track and could excel through the minor league levels next season. This season so far in the AZL League, he is hitting .245 with 1 2B, 2 HR, and 16 SB’s across 16 games.
Fans need to stop forgetting about this kid because he has become one of the most electric prospects in the Mariners farm system and his professional career is just beginning.
