The running back market has taken another hit. Dalvin Cook is not the only player taking the effects. Jonathan Taylor has requested a trade after contract talks with the Colts flare up. Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news.
Taylor has been in Indy for three years. He was an All-Pro Running Back in 2021. He is currently listed on the physically unable to perform list. Taylor has been eligible for an extension since the end of last season. Nearly every team, refuses to lock down their star running backs. The Colts have refused to lock down Taylor long-term.
Star running backs have notably tried and failed to get suitable long-term contracts from their teams this offseason, including the Los Angeles Chargers’ Austin Ekeler, the New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley, the Las Vegas Raiders’ Josh Jacobs and the Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Pollard.
Through three seasons, Taylor has posted 3,841 rushing yards, 802 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns from scrimmage, an average of 1,280 yards on the ground, 267 through the air and 12 touchdowns per season. Taylor recently told reporters this summer that he wanted to be a Colt for life.
Irsay Refuses to Trade Taylor:
Jim Irsay made it clear that the Colts won’t look to trade Jonathan Taylor. “We will not trade Jonathan Taylor,” Irsay said. “That is a certainty. Not now or not in October.”
More often than not, a team wants to see how a player can perform coming off an injury. That may be the case with the Colts.
“We love Jonathan, we need Jonathan,” Irsay said. “Our hope is Jonathan has an outstanding year and that we have a good year as a team and then we get his next contract done. That’s the hope. We think the world of him as a person, as a player. It’s just timing. When your time comes to get paid, then you get paid.”
