Josef Newgarden beats Pato O’Ward and Alex Palou in a thrilling battle in the final laps for his third career win at the Texas Motor Speedway. Newgarden took the checkered flag under caution as Romain Grosjean crashed on the next to last lap to bring out the white and the yellow together clinching the win for Newgarden.
Newgarden led several times throughout the race but found himself in traffic in the closing laps. Following the next to last caution flag of the race, Newgarden found himself in third battling O’Ward and Palou as the laps ticked down. Newgarden was able to take the lead with just two laps to go when Grosjean’s misfortune became Newgarden’s saving grace.
Grosjean’s late crash put a damper on what had been a stellar day. He had been near the front all day long and was charging for a potential top five when he had to let off the gas to avoid Alex Palou who was losing out on the battle with Newgarden and O’Ward. Grosjean avoided Palou but lost control when he tried to get back on the gas and backed his car into the wall. What looked to be a top five car ended with a 14th place finish.
