The Houston Astros are looking to compete for a World Series title once again in 2024, which becomes even more apparent with the signing of top closer Josh Hader. Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the two sides reached an agreement on a five-year, $95 million deal.
With the addition of Josh Hader, it’ll be interesting to see how the Astros utilize their bullpen. Especially with Joe Espada replacing Dusty Baker. They already have an elite closer in Ryan Pressly. Maybe they alternate days when one isn’t available. Maybe one becomes primarily a setup guy. Nonetheless, it’ll create the best 1-2 punch in an MLB bullpen. Outside of those two, the Astros will still have a valuable bench. Arguably, the best ‘pen heading into the 2024 season with the likes of Bobby Abreu, Rafael Montero and others.
Though, the Astros bullpen did lose Hector Neris, Ryne Stanek and Phil Maton. In addition to that, Kendall Graveman has been ruled out for the 2024 season.
With many of the bigger contract signings we have seen this offseason, many of them have included a deferral. The deal between Hader and the Astros does not have one. The money will come straight up, making Hader the highest-paid relief pitcher in all of baseball. In 2022, Edwin Diaz had earned a five-year, $102 million extension. However, the deferrals have brought the value to about $93.1 million.
In 2023, Hader posted a 1.28 ERA across 56.1 innings. He also recorded 33 saves while with the Padres. Hader, 29, is a three-time Hoffman reliever of the year. The 2023 season was the fourth time in his career that Hader had crossed the 30-save threshold. What’s even more impressive is that he did it in just 61 games.
