Julio Jones Traded to Tennessee Titans

In a Sunday Morning move that strengthens the Tennessee Titans acquire star wide receiver Julio Jones. The expected deal, which has not been finalized yet, was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport. In the deal, the Titans are expected to send a second-round per Rappaport. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini report that the exact deal is still being worked out.

The drama with Julio Jones and the Falcons has been an ongoing storyline throughout the offseason. In his pre-draft news conference, Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said the following regarding trading any player,

“Pointing to the cap, pointing to the fact that we will answer calls on any players. When teams ask about players, we have to answer those calls. We have to listen because we knew when we stepped into this, we were going to have to make some tough decisions because it’s just the reality of it, that’s where we are with the salary cap. So we have to make some difficult decisions, so we have to look at all of the different options and all of the different scenarios so if someone calls about any player, we have to discuss it and do what’s right for the team.”

Jones’ arrival in Tennessee comes after weeks of drama between him and the Falcons. Jones admitted he wanted to leave Atlanta during an interview on Undisputed.

For the Titans, this is a move that strengthens their offense and gives quarterback Ryan Tannehill a No. 1 wide receiver. The Titans, the past couple of years, have been heavily reliant on the running game and running back Derrick Henry. Though the Titans have been successful with Henry, adding Jones to the roster, gives Head Coach Mike Vrabel options with the offense.

The benefit for the Titans is that they do not have to give up a first-round pick to acquire Jones. Dianna Russini tweeted on May 27 that the Falcons received an offer which they would have received a first-rounder.

However, the Falcons will also benefit as they get rid of massive cap space, and the Titans get a team-friendly contract. In the remaining three years of Jones’s contract, this season is where the Titans will pay the most money at $15,300,000. For the remaining two years of the contract, the Titans will be scheduled to pay $11,513,000 for both seasons. However, there is a potential opt-out at the end of the 2022 season.

Barring the deal falling through at the last minute, Julio Jones will get his wish of playing for a new team this fall.
