On Wednesday night the whole College Football world was shocked at Nick Saban’s surprise retirement. However, Per ESPN’s Chris Low and Mark Schlabach, former Washington Head Coach Kalen Deboer will be accepting the vacant Alabama job.
Deboer is capturing one of, if not the most prized job in College Football and inheriting a team that was among one of the four teams in the College Football Playoff. Alabama being a top-five program wanted a coach who will keep them from missing a beat.
Kalen Deboer to Alabama is the right choice because all he has done is win at every program he’s been the coach of. Deboer has a record of 104-12 one of the best in College Football.
However, Alabama has lost 11 players to the transfer portal due to Saban’s announcement. It has become a must to grab a head coach who can recruit and deliver immediately. With the SEC (Southeastern Conference) expanding and adding more elite programs (Oklahoma and Texas) can fall down quickly as a top destination for recruits if they don’t find the right guy.
In addition, Deboer will be inheriting the number two recruiting class of 2024 in the country. With the SEC being a different level of competition, Deboer is upgrading his career and has the chance of being at Alabama for the next 15 years with how he’s been able to resurrect two programs.
Prior to Kalen DeBoer taking the offer from Alabama, we had seen many top coaches across College Football decline the position. Coaches like Oregon’s Dan Lanning, Florida State’s Mike Norvell, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian and Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin.
Kalen Deboer’s resume is very appealing, he took a team from 4-8 in 2021 and turned them into a powerhouse. This past season he led the Washington Huskies to a 14-1 record and an appearance in the National Championship. The Huskies had a record of 25-3 in the past two seasons with DeBoer. A huge reason why Alabama fans should be excited about this move is because he holds a record of 5-0 against Dan Lanning and SEC rival Steve Sarkisian.
