The Red Sox’s win last night over the Atlanta Braves also marks a historic moment as Kenley Jansen collected his 400th career save. With this save, Jansen is now 7th on the all time saves list, with the next member being Billy Wagner with 422. Jansen is adding on to his already impressive hall of fame resume and he is on pace to have another great season.
Kenley Jansen’s effectiveness has had a resurgence in 2023 as he currently holds a 0.77 ERA over 11.2 IP. His velocity is way up from previous years as he is regularly hitting 97mph on his cutter. Last night’s historic save included several cutters up at 99mph, which we haven’t seen from Kenley in years.
Kenley Jansen Has Become What This Red Sox Bullpen Needed
The Red Sox signed Kenley Jansen to a 2-year, $32M contract over this past winter. Boston desperately needed a closer after they blew 28 of 65 save opportunities in 2022. The acquisition of Kenley Jansen has already been a huge benefit as he already has more saves (9) this season than any Red Sox reliever had all last season.
Kenley Jansen was drafted as a catcher and was transformed into one of the best closers in the last decade. While he may go into Cooperstown in a Dodgers hat, the effect he has had on the Red Sox bullpen has already been fantastic. His next milestone is at 423 saves when he passes Billy Wagner for sixth on the all-time saves list.
