NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick has announced he will retire as a full time driver following the 2023 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup season. The news was first broken by the Atlantic Wednesday night. His retirement will bring the end of an era for the sport as the last remaining driver who raced under the Winston Cup banner. At 47-year-old, Kevin Harvick will be the oldest active competitor in his final full time season.
KEVIN HARVICK CUP SERIES ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Harvick is one of the most accomplished drivers on the circuit. Despite entering the NASCAR Cup Series in the most tragic of circumstances, being promoted at Richard Childress Racing following the death of Dale Earnhardt, he quickly set himself up for success. Harvick outdueled Jeff Gordon at Atlanta for his first career win in just his third career start. Harvick won Rookie of the Year honors in 2001. He beat Mark Martin to the stripe in one of the most exciting Daytona 500 finishes in history in 2007. Following the 2013 season, Harvick moved from RCR to Stewart-Haas Racing where he won the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series Championship. Going into his final season, Harvick has won 60 races, tying him with Kyle Busch for ninth on the all-time wins list.
OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Harvick is also an accomplished driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Harvick won 47 races across 21 seasons. He is also a two time champion, winning the series highest crown in 2001 and 2006.
Harvick also races in the NASCAR Truck series winning 14 races over 19 seasons. He also won NASCAR’s All-Star race in 2007 and 2018. His combined 121 wins and three championships across NASCAR’s top three series make him a prime candidate for Hall of Fame induction as soon as he is eligible.
Thank you to Kevin Harvick for an awesome career. At a time when the sport had suffered arguably it’s biggest loss, Harvick picked up the ball and ran with it. The sport is better because Kevin Harvick raced in it. And every NASCAR fan should be grateful for getting to see him race.
