The Kirill Kaprizov saga has taken another turn. To recap, the reigning NHL rookie of the year has been in contract negotiations with the Minnesota Wild, and CSKA Moscow of the KHL. Remember, because Kirill Kaprizov hasn’t played that many NHL games, he is a certain type of restricted free agent. Because of this status, only the Wild can offer him an NHL contract. He turned down a contract offer from the Wild that was eight years and $72 million.

I know what your thinking, that is a lot of money. Yes, yes it is. So why would he turn it down? Well, Kaprizov and his camp do not want a long term deal no matter how much money it contains. He is seeking a short or medium term deal for about four or five years. Kaprizov seems to want to bet on himself in a few years and pick where he wants to play. He feels he will be worth $10-$11 million a year down the road.

What We Know Right Now

Kaprizov has a tentative agreement to join CSKA Moscow for the upcoming season. The deal is one year and eight figures. The season starts on September 1st, meaning the Wild only have until then to sign Kaprizov to a new contract. Otherwise, he is gone. This is all according to Frank Seravalli, and there’s more. Seravalli also says that Kaprizov’s representatives claim they have not been given a contract offer since April. The Wild remain open to the kind of deal Kaprizov is interested in.

Kaprizov was the best player on the ice for the Wild this past season, and it wasn’t even close. His departure would mean a major step back for team in terms of wins and production. Kaprizov scored 27 goals and had 51 points in 55 games. Imagine what he can do with a normal schedule. The Wild need to get this deal done.
